Grants to Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania nonprofit organizations for regional, statewide, and local projects that benefit designated watersheds. Funding is intended for projects that benefit the tidally-related New Jersey Harbor-New York complex, including Hackensack, Raritan, and Passaic Watersheds, the Delaware River Basin, and the Schuylkill Valley.

All grant proposals shall be limited to focusing on one or more of these three areas:

  • Environmental advocacy and action projects
  • Water quality and quantity issues
  • Environmental issues in urban areas

Grants will be offered in the following categories:

  • Traditional
  • Small Grants: Smaller grass roots groups may submit proposals under this category to be ranked and funded separately. 
  • Three Year Grants: Eligible proposals shall demonstrate a need for an ongoing commitment due to the complexity or duration of the issues. Collaboration among various groups toward a particular project goal for these grant proposals are encouraged but not required. Applications need to be specific in providing measurable desired outcomes. Where applicable, success measures should be expressed with benchmarks that may include percentage changes or numeric targets. 

Applicants should describe with as much specificity as possible how their project will mitigate environmental impacts on the watersheds identified below. Applicants should also specify the municipalities that will benefit from the project.

  • Environmental projects in and/or near the Kill Van Kull, the Arthur Kill, Newark Bay, Upper and Lower New York Bay, and/or other waters in the tidally-related New York-New Jersey Harbor Complex.
  • Environmental projects in the vicinity of Spa Spring Creek, the Arthur Kill, Raritan Bay, and/or tidally related waterways.
  • Environmental projects in the Delaware River Basin.
  • Environmental projects that have a direct benefit in or near the Delaware River watershed
  • Environmental projects in the municipalities that constitute the 37 Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners service area. Owner Municipalities: Belleville, Bloomfield, Clifton, East Rutherford (partially), East Newark, Garfield, Glen Ridge, Haledon, Harrison, Kearny (partially), Lodi, Lyndhurst (partially), Montclair, Newark, North Arlington (partially), Nutley, Orange, Passaic, Paterson, Prospect Park, Rutherford (partially), Wallington. Leasees: Bayonne, East Orange, Fair Lawn, Glen Rock, Hawthorne, Jersey City, Little Falls, North Caldwell*, North Haledon, Saddle Brook, Totowa, Union City*, West Orange, West Paterson, Wyckoff*. *Those municipalities have some portion going through one of the others.
  • Environmental projects that have a direct connection to the Schuylkill River and its watershed.

Number of Grants:

EENJ funds approximately 15 to 20 organizations per year. A maximum of three (3) Three Year Grants may be awarded per year: two grants will be in the NE Metro area inclusive of the PVSC area and one grant to the Delaware River Basin.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Traditional: The Maximum grant amount in this category is $20,000.
- Small Grants: Maximum grant amounts for this category will be $7,000.
- Three Year Grants: Maximum grant amount is $20,000 per year.

The average grant is in the range of $7,000 to $20,000.

Term of Contract:

Grants usually cover a 12 month period (except for Three Year Grants).

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Preference will be given to nonprofit environmental organizations that have an Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3) designation.

Funds will not be given to individuals, to endowments, for general operating, or for capital expenditures (building or renovation).

Projects in the Atlantic Coastal Basin or the Wallkill Basin are not eligible.

Pre-Application Information:

- Deadline for submission of 2020 grant proposals will be: Sunday, December 15, 2019. Proposals must be postmarked no later than this date—EENJ cannot accept faxed or emailed copies.
- Grants are announced on Earth Day, April 22.

EENJ would appreciate you using regular mail rather than overnight services or other special delivery services requiring a signature. If you include a self-addressed, postage paid envelope with your proposal, EENJ will send a confirmation when it is received.
