Deadline Date:

07/15/19 5:00PM PT

Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $10,000 to new filmmakers from underrepresented communities to develop their first feature-length film. Funding is intended to assist emerging filmmakers to take nonfiction and fictional feature films from the development stage through pre-production and beyond.

Sundance Institute considers scripts at various stages of development, but you must have a full, completed draft of the project in order to be considered.

Competitive applicants will have completed and exhibited compelling short films and/or episodics and now have a feature-film project (fiction or nonfiction) in advanced development that is ready to enter pre-production. All projects selected must be either written or directed by an artist from an underrepresented community—e.g., artists who identify as women or LGBTQ+, people of color, or people with disabilities. These artists will reflect the Institute’s commitment to develop and nurture the next generation of creative voices, and their selection will be based upon the quality of their project and the proposed use of the grant funding as outlined in the application.

The Foundation hopes that by providing first funding and creative development support from its staff, it can circumvent the barriers that so many emerging filmmakers from marginalized communities face when seeking to launch their first feature. In offering a first vote of confidence and a catalytic first infusion of funding, the Foundation hopes to facilitate opportunities for more first-time feature filmmakers to enter the industry, and to build a more representative storytelling ecosystem.

The Foundation supports independent fiction and nonfiction feature films that showcase bold creative visions, artful film language, effective storytelling, originality and feasibility, contemporary cultural relevance, and a potential to reach and connect with their intended audience.
